Courage Theme in To Kill a Mockingbird Essay In this novel, Harper Lee explores a range of different themes. From prejudice and segregation due to race and class to societies beliefs to the right and wrong. The major theme which runs through out this novel is courage. Courage is demonstrated in many ways, such as physical courage, standing up to what you believe in, overcoming personal fears and even childhood dares are all a form of this theme. I would like to determine what real courage means to both Harper Lee and to the characters of this novel. I will do this by analysing two extracts which represent the courage shown in this book. The death of Mrs. Dubose shocked Jem as he had no thought to the pain Mrs. Dubose inflected upon her body as she tried desperately to rid herself of her morphine addiction. Jem had always regarded her as an utterly revolting person who was barely fit to be called a lady. He never considered her as his fathers role model or the bravest women his father had ever known. In this extract courage is displayed by two characters. Firstly Mrs. Dubose, who had the courage to make an attempt to disregard her horrid addiction. She had the courage to stand up to what she believed in and it was very important to her that she at least made an effort to try. She did this knowing clearly that she was very unlikely to succeed and even after realising this she still insisted that: She was going to leave this world beholden to nothing or nobody. Her desire was to die free. Mrs. Dubose had no intention of leaving this world owing thanks to anything or anybody. This is the main reason why she tried so hard to rid herself of the addiction. This is a very courageous act because she had the determination to try and attempt the impossible whilst others would probably think, what is the point when I have only a few months to live and they would most likely give up before they started. But not Mrs. Dubose. She stuck to her belief because she was so determined that she had reached a point where her whole body and mind relied upon an alarm clock. She was fully aware of the risk she was taking and that she would experience a lot of physical and emotional suffering, but she still took her step. This is why Atticus portrays her as the bravest person he ever knew. Mrs. Dubose was not the only character in this extract to display such bravery. Jem had also shown courage by overcoming his personal fear of Mrs. Dubose. He did not fear her as such, but he was sickened by her and this is the reason why he was so reluctant to go and read to her. He had no intention of doing so, but was forced upon by his father. He felt nauseated by her because of her revolting looks, which both Jem and Scout found quite hideous. She was horrible. Her face was the colour of a dirty pillow case and the corners of her mouth glistened with wet. The readers are given a very graphic description of Mrs. Duboses appearance. She is portrayed as an extremely revolting and dirty women whos skin colour is beyond normal and there are puddles of saliva emerging from the corners of her mouth. This indicates exactly why the children were disgusted by her. Despite Jems dislike for this women and her hideous looks he had to overcome these thoughts and proceed with his punishment which was to read. Jem had never viewed her from a different point of view. He always saw her as an old, ugly women and never imagined that this old lady was capable of so much. For a child of Jems age to have to have to read to a women like Mrs. Dubose must have been terrifying, but Jem had to pick up the courage and was successful in doing so to face his fear. He occasionally complained to Atticus but he never tried to avoid it. Although he approaches the task as a challenge, he displays an extremely large amount of courage for a child of his age. Atticus wants his children to realise and understand that real courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. He uses Mrs. Dubose as an example to show his children that courage comes from within a person and that anyone is able to show courage. For example by conquering a personal fear or even standing up to their beliefs. He wanted his children to see that courage is not and does not have to be someone who brings pain to other living things, whether they be a person or an animals by violence or any other form. Even though Mrs. Dubose and Atticus differed in opinion, Atticus still respected her and admired her for her bravery. Atticuss admiration also shines out of Jem when he realises her bravery and the true courage she really shows. When he was first presented with the flower his first reaction to the flower was: Old hell-devil, old hell-devil! he screamed, flinging it down. Why cant she leave me alone? The reason for his dramatic reaction is that he believed that Mrs. Dubose was still haunting him even after her death. He thought that the flower was a reminder of his crime for which he was punished for. He never interpreted the flower as a gift from Mrs. Dubose, and that it was her way of thanking Jem for reading to her and helping her through such a tough time in her life. Fear, Humility, and Courage in The Red Badge of Courage EssayThe Finchs. The family have been through many tough, difficult and challenging times and I believe that it is their courage that got them this far. Personally I agree with Atticuss definition of real courage and that real courage is doing what you think is right and living by what you believe in and not by what your society believes is right. I also believe that there are different ways in which courage can advance in and be expressed. Many of the characters in this novel show courage, but in a more subtle way compared to the Finchs. For example Ms. Maudie. Although her views are similar to those of Atticus she does not display them so rationally. She does not tend to be very open about her view and she keeps them to herself. She shows courage by, not so much standing up to her beliefs and opinion, but she has the courage to think differently than the rest of her society and in rare cases act on them. Whilst others would deny their personal thoughts and views and proceed with the crowd. She displays courage by standing by the children when everyone else practically bombards the children with questions. At this point she stands by the children to show them that her relationship with the children is the same as before and that nothing has changes between them. This is a form of courage because there may be many controversial issues surrounding and regarding her actions, but she still presses on to what she believes in. She also demonstrated courage when she approached the burning of her house in s calm manner and had a very positive feeling towards the whole situation Another character who I think expressed courage and bravery is Arthur (Boo) Radley. It took a lot of courage for him to come out of hiding after being indoors for so many years. For Boo to come out of his shell was extremely brave from his point of view. This is because he hardly ever came out, and to come out and expose himself to everyone in society after so many years must have been quite difficult. He came out of hiding to rescue the children when they were attacked by Robert Ewell. Dolphus Raymonds act of courage is not as clear or straight forward as the other characters. Whether or not Dolphus Raymond shows any courage can be discussed and is a two sided issue. This is because although he was brave enough to disregard his societies values and have a family with a Negro women he does not posses the courage to admit that he did so intentionally. Instead he blames it on the fact that he is an alcoholic who is living with the mistake he made whilst being drunk. He uses this as an excuse to justify his actions. Robert Ewell does not maintain any courage of any type or form. This is because he was neither brave enough or strong enough to procure revenge on Atticus. The man who had exposed the reality of the Ewell residents to the whole of Maycomb. Instead he attacked two innocent and helpless children in the dark. They were Atticuss children who had done no harm to Mr. Ewell or any member of his family in any manner. I would sum up Mr. Ewell as a poor father who takes advantage of his role and neglects his children and deprives them of the love they really deserve, and is not capable to take care of his children or himself. I thought Mrs. Dubose definitely displayed a large amount of courage as she was willing to fight a battle which she was unlikely to win but came out as a winner at the end. Tom Robinson represented a great deal of courage. He went on trial for a crime he had not committed and spoke the truth even though he would be called a liar. He entered the court knowing he did not have a chance to win. He pleaded his innocence and put his word against a white mans. This takes a lot of strength to do so, because at this time racism was extremely high and no Negro would ever deny such a charge in font of a dominant white society. He could have admitted the crime and be sentenced, but he was brave enough to try, similar to Mrs. Dubose. I thought that Scout was also extremely courageous because she restricted herself from fighting and got labelled as a coward. For Scouts character this task must have been very challenging as she is used to the idea of fighting with anyone in order to defend her pride. Unlike Jem, Scout had not yet reached the level where she was able to determine the requirements of a sensible action. For her to restrict herself from fights and hold her head high whilst other children refereed to her father as a nigger lover is not as easy for her as it would be for Jem. Fighting being a natural reaction for Scout especially when it comes down to defending her family members and pride, just like it would be for anyone who valued their family. She did this because her father had asked her not to fight despite what the children at school said about him. This not only indicates her level of courage, but also her respect for her father. In conclusion to this essay I have determined that some of the characters in this book display courage, but they are often unnoticed, whilst others shine through and they are prised highly.

Social Learning and Trait Theories According to the Encyclopedia of Psychology (2001), social learning theory is based on the psychology concept that the learning processes within our environment establish human behavior. Aspects of reinforcement in either rewards or punishment meant to develop desirable behavior most specifically determine it. Trait theories on the other hand identify personality as a set of characteristics that are based on our consistent desires, attitudes and behavior that form a stable and consistent part of who we are. Julian B. Rotter is one of the earliest psychologists who developed the theory that besides the earlier research done on behaviorism by the likes of Ian Pavlov, cognition also played a huge role in social learning. His argument was based on the theory that a persons behavior is determined by expectancy. As a result, an individual behaves in a certain way based on the expected outcome of their behavior as well as the value that individual places on that outcome. Rotters personality theory based on social learning had two variables; internals and externals (Mearns, 2000). People have different beliefs on their ability to control whether or not their various behaviors in life are reinforced. Internals believe that they have control over the kind of behaviors they portray while externals are of the view that their behavior is because of external factors, which they have no control over. These two variables do not however apply exclusively in individuals so that people are classified as either internals or externals. Generally, an internal individual can portray external traits in various situations. Personality in general is because of ones interaction with their environment. Another popular social learning theorist Albert Bandura argued that cognition, behavior, and ones environment have a reciprocal relationship. This, he justified by explaining that ones understanding and interpretation of a situation such as hostility causes them to portray hostile behavior. This in turn often affects their environment as it may cause similar hostile thoughts and behavior in other people. Bandura is the same theorist who introduced the concept of observational learning (Kreitner, Luthans, n.d.). People learn certain behavior by observing the consequences of such behavior on other people. As a result, we will take up the behaviors that get positive reinforcement and stay away from those that are punished. This kind of learning is especially typical of children, who imitate behavior that is rewarded in other children or even adults within their environment. Understanding the concept of social learning and trait theories has enabled me to interpret the behaviors and personalities of people within my environment such as my home, school and the work place. We are all unique in the different traits that define each of us, and there are variables that determine our unique behavior (The Encyclopedia of Psychology, 2001). One such variable is our individual perceptions of our environment. Though people may share an environment such as in school and the work place, they may ha ve different perceptions of it, which would translate into their different behaviors. Expectations are another variable that determine our unique behaviors. Everyone has their individual expectations that drive them to behave in a certain way. If for example, attending school in time may be because a student expects to qualify to join a reputable college once they attain good grades, another student who does not plan to join college will not display the same behavior of diligently attending school. Personal values also contribute to individual behavior, which is driven by ones personal goals and ideals, which make them, behave in a certain way. Self-regulation and plans in relation to achieving our goals and living by our ideals determines individual behavior. Therefore, to understand peoples personalities and behaviors in society, I have learned to analyze the determinants that contribute to both within their environment as opposed to making generalizations and assumptions on the causes of their behaviors and the formation of their traits. According to Jones (2005), an individuals environment plays a major role in the formation of their personality and behavior. Aspects of the environment such as ones family, peers, and neighborhood contribute to the social learning that shapes behavior and personality. Having learned this, I have been able to understand peoples behavior better by first looking at the environment in which they live or were brought up. Criminal behavior such as robbery and burglary in an individual for example, may be quickly interpreted as a cause of poverty that drives them to earn a living in this way. However, research has shown that individuals who are brought up in an abusive environment have a high chance of turning to such criminal behavior (Jones, 2005). They may be living comfortable lives but still turn to criminal behavior as a way of punishing other people in a similar manner that they feel they were treated growing up. In the same token, I have learned that observational learning is a powerful tool that leads to the formation of personality and behavior. Jones (2005) further cites the development of aggressive behavior in children as a product of observing the same in their parents, peers, or siblings. This has alerted me to realize that how we behave within our social setting plays a big role in the development of either desirable or bad behavior in others within our environment, and especially children. It is therefore important for society to portray positive behavior in all aspects of our lives consciously in order to aid in developing positive behavior, attitudes, and personalities in children as they grow up. This would help in ridding society of such undesirable behavior as abuse, aggression, violence and antisocial behavior. One of the major roles of each individual in society is to create a favorable environment for themselves and for other people either in school, in the family or at the work place. Having learned the concepts of social learning and traits theories in the development of behavior and personality, my role is reinforced with helpful knowledge on how I can help individuals develop desirable behavior through providing adequate learning experiences. When an individuals expected outcome of certain behavior is not reinforced, they develop low expectancies so that they are no longer motivated to repeat the behavior. Raising the expectancy for reinforcement especially in children will help them develop and sustain desirable behavior. This can be done through helping them develop rational expectancies and encouraging them to behaving in ways that they have been avoiding for the fear that they will fail. In my interactions with others, the knowledge on social learning and traits theories gives me the ability to understand all kinds of people that I meet. They may be introverted, extroverted, hostile, or lacking in confidence but I will be in a position to reach out to them since I am able to understand their different traits. This is as opposed to dismissing people for example on the grounds of being hostile and therefore seemingly unapproachable. It is thus possible for me to approach such an individual and teach them how to take control of their anger and hostility. I can do this by helping them shift their personal ideals and educating them on how negatively they affect their environment, like their children or siblings with such behavior. Conclusion Social learning plays a huge role in the formation of traits and personality in individuals in society (Kreitner and Luthans, n.d.). Once behavior is formed in childhood, based on the conditions of our environment, it is very hard to change that behavior in future. As a result, it is imperative that society creates conducive environment for children to develop healthy personalities and desirable behavior. Development of self-evaluative ideals is also important as it helps individuals create standards for themselves that are at par with positive behavior. Kreitner and Luthans (n.d.) insist that promoting healthy cognitive processes is another handy tool in promoting desirable behavior in social learning. Such processes would enable individuals within the society to reason logically when interpreting different aspects of their environment. This would in turn change such bad behavior as violence and aggression when peoples reasoning powers are increased. This is generally shaping peoples perceptions in ways that enables them to interpret their environment positively in order to develop healthy personalities and positive behavior.

Robert Frost Robert Frost (1874-1963) was one of the finest of rural New England's 20th century pastoral poets. Frost published his first books in Great Britain in the 1910s, but he soon became in his own country the most read and constantly anthologized poet. Frost was awarded the Pulitzer Prize four times. Robert Frost was born in San Francisco, California on March 26, 1874. His father, a journalist and local politician, died when Frost was eleven years old. His Scottish mother resumed her career as a schoolteacher to support her family. The family lived in Lawrence, Massachusetts, with Frost's paternal grandfather. In 1892 Frost graduated from a high school and attended Dartmouth College for a few months. Over the next ten years he held a number of jobs. In 1894 the New York Independent published Frost's poem "My Butterfly" and he had five poems privately printed. In 1895 he married a former schoolmate, Elinor White; they had six children. Frost worked as a teacher and continued to write and publish his poems in magazines. From 1897 to 1899 Frost studied at Harvard, but left without receiving a degree. He moved to Derry, New Hampshire, working there as a cobbler, farmer, and teacher at Pinkerton Academy and at the state normal school in Plymouth. In 1912 Frost sold his farm and took his wife and four young children to England. There he published his first collection of poems, â€Å"A Boy’s Will† (1913) followed by â€Å"North Boston† (1914), which gained international reputation. The collection contains some of Frost's best-known poems: "Mending Wall," "The Death of the Hired Man," "Home Burial," "After Apple-Picking," and "The Wood-Pile." After returning to the US in 1915 with his family, Frost bought a farm near Franconia, New Hampshire. He taught later at Amherst College (1916-38) and Michigan universities. In 1916 Frost was made a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In the same year appeared his third collection of verse, â€Å"Mountain Interval†, which contained such poems as "The Road Not Taken," "Birches," and "The Hill Wife." Frost's images - woods, stars, houses, brooks, - are usually taken from everyday life. With his down-to-earth approach to his subjects, readers found it easy to follow the poet into deeper truths, without being burdened with pedantry. In 1920 Frost purchased a farm in South Shaftsbury, Vermont, near Middlebury College. His wife died in 1938 and he lost four of his children.

It plans to triple the target turnover to Rs. 150 crores from institutional sales. LG has made its institutional sales strategy by identifying and proactively targeting five different segments to push the LG range: brand promotions; the welfare segment (factory workers and office staff); government sector; direct users (hospitals, hotels); and the canteen stores departments (CSD) of the armed forces. A distinct strategy has been tailored for each of the five segments.In brand promotions for example, the perceived value of the products given as gifts is important, whereas for the welfare segment aspirational value, convenience and easy financing are prime factors. Meanwhile, hotels represent a price sensitive segment requiring specially customized products. Welfare: In this segment, LG is targeting a consumer base – the aspirational consum er, mostly factory staff – that most companies ignore, but which has considerable clout in terms of generating volumes. Their experience in the activities will then be shared trough discussion group with the rest of the workshop participants.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Each of the activities assigned to each group are designed to illustrate how the process of education supports its purposes. The purposes of education, as to be presented during the Introduction of Workshop by Team 1 have been summarized as follows: Education is to teach members of society ethical and moral values, the social system which includes social order, politics and economics as well as the standards and norms expected from each member of that society (Sever, 2006) Education has the purpose of developing competencies and knowledge for the individual and social productivity, allowing individuals the ability to empower themselves and preserve society (Anderson, 2005). Education is a means to realize human potential and achieving self-worth (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) ESD Section, 2007) Task Schedule The activity will me be led by a management team made up of four teams. Three of the teams or management team member will be assigned to supervise a workshop group with their activity. The fourth team will handle the introduction and processing of the workshop activities. The workshop activities for each group will be discussed in detail in later section of the paper. The schedule or outline of activities will be as followed strictly to ensure the group and worship activities will be accomplished and to promote the management of activities. There has been a history of conflicts among some groups because of cultural conflicts. A few of the groups have limited interaction with other groups. At the same time, some social service and public officers have had difficulty in encouraging social participation among groups that have led to some difficulties in delivering primary services. One of the strategies that has been seen to improve relationships among these groups is by using schools as a platform? Do you believe that such interventions will be effective? Explain and discuss with your group.    Group B   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There is a greater demand for computer literacy today. Companies consider computer skills as a minimum requirement for employment. At the same time, many services and personal activities also require a degree of computer proficiency which includes banking, communications and filing for taxes among others. Thus, many schools have invested in the procurement of these technological tools and teachers have been encouraged to incorporate computers and other technologies to their classes. This has entailed a significant resource investment that is need just as much in the development of new infrastructure, improving compensation of teaching personnel or allocating it for support services for students. Do you think schools are justified in their investment in computer literacy? Explain and discuss with your group.    Group C   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   According to the UNESCO, one of their motivations in emphasizing the importance of education in developing countries is its potential in contributing to national development. Do you believe that such a perspective is valid? How can education contribute to national development indicators such as gross domestic product, unemployment and crime rate?
